ROAR offers adult survivors of gender-based violence guidance in putting their lives back together after trauma. My purpose is to coach each client through identifying and executing a course of action that is best for their circumstances and goals. We discuss the client’s individual needs; locate resources for legal, medical, and other care; coach and empower them to navigate various legal processes; educate them about their rights and options throughout stages of recovery; and assist with any other life-admin needs they may have in the aftermath of violence.

At ROAR, we believe that recovery hinges on building skills, informed by our core values. We are here to coach you through that process:

RIGHTS - The key to regaining our power after trauma is knowing our options, our resources, and our rights.

OVERCOMING - includes the practical aspects of healing. The process and outcomes of figuring out strategies, actions and plans toward achieving our recovery goals and following through, one step at a time.

AGENCY and ADVOCACY - finding our voice and our power to know what we need and . It’s about making clear and informed choices, based on our rights, and developing our ability to stand up for ourselves.

RESILIENCE - our ability to bounce back, understand our capacities and challenges, regulate our emotions as we pursue growth and healing. We value resilience not as a “cure” for our pain, but rather learning to go on and find joy through it.

What can we coach you through?

  1. Identifying resources: Helping you find and communicate with care and services, such as medical, mental health or financial resources available to survivors according to your circumstances and needs.Whether it’s finding a doctor, a lawyer, or navigating processes like Victims of Crime Benefits - we’ve got you.

  2. Legal consulting: We can assist with thinking through any legal actions you may want to take. Do you want to report to the police but don’t know how to do it or where to go or what that might entail? Are you facing discrimination or harassment at work and need to navigate HR? Are you looking for a lawyer to help you with a lawsuit? We’re here to coach you through all of that, think through the pros and cons of each options, guide you on how to communicate and assert your rights with all of these. Please note that we are able to provide guidance on the law, but we are not attorneys and cannot provide direct legal services such as litigation.

  3. Housing: Do you need to figure out a new living situation in the aftermath of your trauma? Many survivors don’t know that CA has strong protections for renters who need to relocate because of violence and don’t know how to navigate moving with landlords. We’re here to coach you through your relocation and safety plans.

  4. Education: our mission to educate is twofold - we wish to educate survivors about all aspects of the recovery process, as well as educate our community about gender-based violence and the help available to survivors. Reach out to us with any question, follow us on IG @roar_survivors, and look out for any speaking engagements!
